Ron’s Big Catch

Graphite on paper 19x24

Ron’s Big Catch is a study in layering two distinct images to form a single, cohesive composition. The subject is my grandfather, Ronald Schaefer, whose lifelong passion was fishing. Some of my favorite childhood memories are catching bass on the Chesapeake Bay with him on his boat. For this piece, I combined an image of my grandpa as a child, holding a flounder he caught, with one of him later in life, proudly holding a salmon, the way I remember him best. I allowed the salmon to extend beyond the image border to help differentiate the two layers while maintaining a unified, seamless composition.
